Considered ceremonially unclean, they were not allowed into the Temple courts to worship. Shepherds’ reward for their difficult work was to be viewed as society’s outsiders. It was dangerous work that required finding grass and water for the flock, restoring those that strayed, and protecting the flock from predators.

So, you all decide to go see if you can find this baby the angels told you about – verse 15 – “And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.” It’s all dark again, just like before, and you turn to your shepherd friends and say, “Did you see THAT? That was AMAZING. Then just as suddenly as the angels appeared, they all DISAPPEAR. Then unexpectedly, the heavens fill with a vast army of angels-an enormous, vast host shouts out glory and praise to God – verses 13-14 – “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” 12 And this shall be a sign unto you Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. There you are watching your sheep talking with the other shepherds probably telling jokes, laughing maybe discussing the political situation in Judea-just doing what you’d been doing for the last several years. This is what we see in verse 8 – “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.” Picture yourself a simple, obscure shepherd, tending your flocks by night, doing your job on a cool Judean night with a few of your shepherd friends. Kids-and moms and dads too-love the story of the shepherds in their fields that first Christmas morn found in Luke 2:8-20.
